2006 Estate Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay
Vanumanutagi Vineyard
It is with great excitement that we release the next Estate Vanumanutagi Chardonnay!  This storied vineyard has been producing phenomenal wines for over twenty years.  Originally part of our family ranch, the property was sold to Fanny Stevenson, Robert Louis Stevenson’s widow.  After several owners since, the property was purchased by Leonard Ware.  He and his family planted the Vanumanutagi vineyard and have been phenomenal caretakers of this beautiful property.  A long hang time in the fall of 2006 allowed these chardonnay grapes to achieve a great flavor profile.  Hand harvested and brought just next door to our winery, this wine went through both primary fermentation and malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels.  Allowed to sit on the lees and not stirred (“sur lee” process), this wine was able to pick up some soft, subtle nuances otherwise not likely to occur.  With lots of tropical fruit and a nice apple finish this is a wine that will go with a lot of different foods!  We suggest you serve this wine chilled, not cold to fully appreciate its true personality.

2005 Santa Cruz Mountains Estate Zinfandel
Following in the footsteps of this wine’s predecessors, this vintage is structured and exemplifies the spicy nature of Zinfandel.  Completely head trained the fruit was picked in late September.  Fermented in small fermentors and hand punched the wine developed a smooth texture which integrates nicely with the formidable tannic structure.  This wine is drinking well now, but will definitely benefit with some cellar time.  We feel this wine will be at its best in 2-5 years.

2005 Santa Cruz Mountains Merlot
Small Vineyards Selection
Do not let the word “Merlot” scare you away from this wine!  To quote one of our wine enthusiasts, “I don’t like Merlot, but I love this one!”  Made from 4 small vineyards in Los Altos, Saratoga & Monte Sereno, this wine is the culmination of the intricacies of these vineyards.  Planted, managed & harvested by our able crew, these grapes were given the amount of sun exposure which we desired, as well as harvested at our precise levels.  This allowed us to make an expressive Merlot.  It is full in the mouth with excellent texture, as well as great briar fruit notes all of which are supported by a firm, yet balanced tannic structure. Drinking well now, but at it’s best over the next 2 to 4 years.

2005 El Dorado Late Harvest Zinfandel
Hummingbird Hill Vineyards
Well, it’s back again!  Harvested later in the 2005 season, this wine developed nice round fruit notes & the addition of 15% Petite Sirah gives the wine a tannic structure that most late harvest style wines lack.  This wine is sweet, but not as sweet as your typical late harvest.  We suggest serving this wine with dark chocolate/cocoa rich deserts, or with “stinky cheese.”  This wine has been the end of many evenings, but it also can start off an evening as an aperitif. Although drinking well now, it will definitely benefit with some cellar time.  This Zin will be at its best in 4 to 8 years.

2004 Santa Cruz Mountains Estate Cabernet Sauvignon
97% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Petite Verdot
Gold Medal 2007 San Francisco International Wine Competition
Continuing in the pattern of this emerging Santa Cruz Mountains vineyard, this classically made wine has the subtle nuances of cocoa and spice, while still having the tannic backbone to make it a wine which deserves to be aged.  Aged for two years in 80% new French oak barrels this wine has picked up the rounding aspects of the oak tannin which, as the wine ages, will meld with the tannin from the mountain fruit to create a truly sublime experience for those who are willing to wait.  This wine will be at its best over the next six to nine years.

Announcing Matt Oetinger’s new “pet project,” IL CANE.
Members of the Fernwood Cellars’ Wine Club had first crack at purchasing these extremely small lots. Now we proudly introduce to you IL CANE, his new Italian brand of wine, is made a bit more irreverently than his Fernwood wines. Even so, these abundant wines have all of the flair and composition of classically made Italian wines, coupled with the modern practices of American wine making techniques.
